8:00 PMDiary Of A Madman by Nikolai Gogol - Rush Pearson
"Diary of a Madman" is based on the 1835 Nikolai Gogol short story of a Russian civil servant who is tormented by his humble position and suffers from ever-increasing delusions of grandeur. Gogol brilliantly unveils his story through diary entries where this civil servant's soul is bared, however the reality of his situation is masked and slowly mined by the reader. The story fluently braids humor and heartache into every line, whatever strand appears dominant depends on the reader's disposition. Gogol writes the story with a care and precision that engenders the tale to ring true today. Written in early 19th century Tsarist Russia, the piece transcends time, locale, culture and translation.
